The Lok Sabha's ethics committee had recommended Mahua Moitra's expulsion after it found her guilty of sharing her parliamentary logins with businessman Darshan Hiranandani.
The report was presented in the House around 12 noon. Following an adjournment, as soon as the House reconvened at 2 pm, parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion to discuss the panel report.
Lok Sabha, with majority votes, expelled TMC MP as it adopted the ethics panel report and recommendation.
On Thursday, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Mentioning that India continues to maintain the momentum of the fastest-growing major economy, with all sectors contributing significantly to economic activities, the finance minister said, "The second quarter growth was very high, it is the highest in the world. The Lok Sabha, on the other hand, passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
The winter session is effectively the last window for the Narendra Modi-led central government to clear legislation before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The session which began on Monday, will be conducted in 15 sittings till December 22.

(ii) In view of highly objectionable, unethical, heinous and criminal conduct of Mahua Moitra, the Committee recommends for an intense, legal, institutional inquiry by the Government of India in a time-bound manner.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill, which will replace the Indian Penal Code if enacted, will be among the bills debated in the Lok Sabha next week, said Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal. Other bills up for consideration from Monday include the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill, which would replace the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Post Office Bill, which seeks to modernise the Indian postal services and has already been passed by the Rajya Sabha.
These bills all aim to replace colonial-era laws—the Indian Penal Code was enacted in 1860, the Indian Evidence Act in 1872, and the Criminal Procedure Act in 1898. When he introduced the bills in the monsoon session of parliament this year, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the bills fulfil one of the “panch prans” (five vows) taken by Prime Minister Modi on Independence Day to “erase all the signs of British slavery”.
“From 1860 to 2023, the country’s criminal justice system functioned as per the laws made by the British. With these three laws, there will be a major transformation in the criminal justice system,” he said.

Congress MP K.C. Venugopal on Friday asked the Union government to take steps to stop caste-based discrimination against Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (SC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) in higher educational institutions.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Venugopal referred to the worrying statistics revealed by Congress MP K Suresh a day earlier in the Lok Sabha, which revealed that around 13,500 students belonging to SC, ST, and OBCs have dropped out of central universities, IITs, and IIMs in the last five years.
“This is a pressing issue that needs an immediate intervention from the Union government,” Venugopal said.
Venugopal also gave a break-up of the data and said that around 4,596 OBC candidates, 2,424 SC candidates, and 2,622 ST candidates have dropped out of central universities in the last five years.
