Great white sharks being researched along California coast using drones

From Santa Barbara to San Diego, the Shark Lab researchers have been flying drones along the coastline to count the number of sharks and people and look at the proximity of the creatures to the shore and swimmers. The coastal community of Del Mar, north of San Diego, is home to a great white shark nursery, the researchers said.

France to ban cafe terrace heaters; reduce carbon footprint

Paris’ hotels and restaurants would find better ways to heat terraces, using efficient heaters, certified renewable energy and windshields to reduce heat loss.

The ban could impact a sector hard-hit by the coronavirus crisis, hence it will not come into force until after the end of the coming winter to give business time to adapt. (Representational Image)(Unsplash)

How coronavirus molecules camouflage in host cell decoded, may lead to drug development

Based on the findings, the researchers have suggested structural sites on the SARS-CoV-2 nsp10 molecule which they say can be targeted for antiviral development.

According to the researchers, deciphering the 3D structure of nsp16 paves the way for the design of new drugs against the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, and other emerging coronavirus infections.(File Photo)

Climate Change: Soybean farms flourish in Northern Russia, close to Arctic Tundra

While Russian soybean farmers are seeing some benefits from warming weather, climate change has been wreaking havoc on global food production. Drought has hampered crop output this year in parts of Uruguay, New Zealand, Europe and Vietnam.

It’s the result of years of rising global temperatures, which are thawing the permafrost and turning the land into fertile soil. (Representational Image)(Unsplash)

Scientists identify six distinct clusters of Covid-19 symptoms in patients

The yet-to-be peer reviewed study, published in the medRxiv preprint platform, used a machine learning algorithm to analyse data from a subset of around 1,600 users in the UK and US with confirmed Covid-19, who had regularly logged their symptoms using the app in March and April.

According to the research, all people reporting symptoms experienced headache and loss of smell, with varying combinations of additional symptoms at various times. (Photo by Parwaz Khan / Hindustan Times)

Scientists identify potential drug targets in Covid-19 genome

According to the study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, these regions on the viral genome are target sites recognised by host miRNA -- which are nucleic acid-based ‘immune system’ operating inside the body’s cells.

The scientists said these miRNAs are essential for controlling the activity of genes within cells, and are also important players in the recognition and destruction of viruses.(REUTERS)
