At least 1300 people died after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit central Turkey and northwest Syria in the early hours of Monday. Hundreds of people are feared trapped in rubble following the disaster, the impact of which was felt in Cyprus and Lebanon as well. As officials mount a frantic rescue operation, Turkey has issued a 'Level 4' alarm, which also calls for international assistance, news agency Reuters reported. At least 20 aftershocks were felt, with the strongest measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, Turkish authorities said. In Syria, the earthquake hit a region also inhabited by around four million people displaced from other parts of the country. Prime minister Narendra Modi and US president Joe Biden have offered condolences and assured Turkey of all possible assistance to cope with this tragedy.
